Gen Z at Work: Crafting an Employer Brand that Speaks to the Next Generation

By

The Gen–Z workforce wave has reached the coast of many workplaces, with a subsequent number of freshers in their early 20s stepping into work life and starting a career. Essentially, we see the need to elevate the employer branding to welcome the latest generation in the workforce. Gen-Z are specifically the generation of people hailing from the 1900s – 2010 and widely known as Zoomers.

In addition to this, they are now the talk of the town for being the tech driven generation, with creative minds, outspoken demands, their views on life in general, diversity in genders, and the modern thoughts they bring out to the world.

However, there’s a lot of discussion shedding light on this new generation leading the world and portraying entirely distinct views, goals, objectives and plans. While the endless debate about Gen-z at the workplace being too demanding and difficult to work with continues the banter following different generations questioning their work ethics and professionalism raising questions about their abilities.

Need for Employer Branding Strategies Reclining Towards The Gen-Z:

Employers are now embracing the shift in employee demands and offering flexibility in work life. Stepping up employer branding remains the ultimate goal, be it with the facilities they need to imply, work-life balance, or the work culture and flexibility.

We have come a long way from traditional workplace rules to integrating new age systems. The latter has taken the internet by the buzz with concepts like:

Bare minimum Mondays, Quiet quitting, Lazy girl job and many more.

Let’s Understand How Employer Branding Strategies Need to Evolve to Speak to the Next Generation:

Although it’s a difficult task to cater to the array of needs of the next generation, sharing tips on how you can make your organization Gen-z friendly to cater to the upcoming generation and stay updated.

  • Quit the Hustle Culture

Gone are the days when people would simply be overworked and exhausted without speaking out!  Although it is existential in many workplaces even now. But with the zoomers coming in and calling out these issues are more prevalent.

The concept of hustle culture, where one prioritizes only work above the other parts of life, ultimately leads to a decline in one’s health and well-being.  While some co-workers may simply be flaunting their extreme workaholic life experience, burnout gradually. According to research, 77% of people feel burnout in their existing jobs.

Gen-Z are demanding a work-life balance that comes with drawing a line between work and life beyond work”. While it also helps you embrace the other aspects of your life like family, friends, personal growth and well-being, mental and physical health, fitness, travel etc.

  • Embrace Productivity Not Presentism:

No presentism is not = to Productivity! The deep-rooted mandatory 9-12 hr. work shift based on your job type or requirement does not determine your productivity at work. Just being present isn’t enough, everyone has days where they do not feel productive.

Productivity comes when you’re making a difference, contributing to work in the best possible way, and, most importantly, being present in body and mind. The Gen-Z have called out this concern, where their higher authorities at work confuse and determine Presentism = Productivity. A 40–48-hour work week is not cool, and some employees even work on weekends.

Gen-Z believes this system is toxic and unrequited. Last year, the debate got viral after Infosys CEO and founder Mr. Narayana Murthy mentioned the need for a 70 hr. workweek which also shed light on the traditional mindset and work shifts in India. While the zoomers completely disagree with such extended work hours.

  • Workcation

The idea of workcation calls for having a break from working in the mundane office setup. However, post the global pandemic, the idea of working from home or anywhere around the world has helped in promoting better productivity. This has also unaffected an individual’s personal plans while also being available at work.

I mean, who wouldn’t like to take a break from their regular desk and instead watch a beautiful sunset or a beach view? With workcations, you don’t need to cancel your travel plans anymore. Often, one may also feel restricted to face continued stress in an office setup, but workcations will also help you get fresh, enhance your creativity and boost your energy levels, resulting in better work and productivity.

  • Worklife Balance:

Many individuals are now experiencing burnout due to prolonged working hours, inability to speak out for themselves, extreme workload, catching up with several demands while also focusing on individual goals.

Due to changing times, stress levels, anxiety, sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, long working hours, and no time off have driven people into a loophole of depression and sicknesses. To avoid these problems, organizations need to be flexible to offer employees better facilities and a work life balance that secures the well-being of their employees.

  • Four-Day Work Week:

The concept of a four-day workweek has been the talk of the town and created a lot of buzz lately, among the working class. Many organizations have already started looking into this, especially overseas. As per research, a significant majority, 81% of the workforce, show support for the idea of a four-day workweek.

Many people believe this will increase their productivity and motivate them to put in their best effort at work, knowing their time off is validated equally. Meanwhile this also helps in maintaining a work-life balance. The idea of having fewer working days leaves more space for time off and unwinding, reducing stress and enhanced focus on workdays. The topic is still in debate, with only a handful of employers agreeing to implement this system.
